Journeymen are people who are talented at petty magic or pretty skilled at something relatively unorthodox, or both. People who fill a niche role in the magical ecosystem, able to do rituals and perform alchemy and exist in their wheelhouse solidly but that’s it. After school there’s often positions in the great state bureaus and their many wings or they become craftspeople or scholars.

Masters are people who have a wide variety in the seven most desired forms of magic (The Seven Virtues), excel in one of them or are skilled and not particularly great at magic and are cunning enough to fight above their weight class. Someone who is a pure telepath, pyrokinetic or diviner is a Master. Someone who has a touch of psychokinesis and knows how to play mean mind games is a Master.

Supremes are talented in more than one of the seven or are just unquestioned champions of their own unorthodox magic, but either way they are pure-strain unquestionably magical. No dabblers, no chicanery or smoke and mirrors. Supremes serve the Imperial Court directly as agents of the empire and advisors and heads of state.

Magic users cannot use magic on each other. They must use surreptitious, indirect and subtle ways to act against other magic users. Those who cannot often excel in precise, quick and brutal confrontation.

The Seven Virtues are the most prized forms of magic sought by the Empire for their applications in peace and war. They are:

  • Control, the ability to force the living to think, feel or act in ways the user desires.
  • Elementalism, the control (not production) of elemental forces.
  • Enchantment, the ability to make things seem different or fool senses without actually transforming them, conjuring something liminal from nothing.
  • Physics, the ability to remotely lift and manipulate physical things.
  • Power, the ability to kill with sheer magical force.
  • Prophecy, the ability to divine the future and see the present from afar, the latter being far more concrete than the former.
  • Transmutation, the ability to totally transform one thing to another. Equivalent exchange is involved and you cannot create from nothing.
